    The National Council for the Social Studies International Assembly (NCSS IA) Best Paper Award was inaugurated in 2018 to acknowledge the best paper presented at the IA annual meeting. Through this award the NCSS IA recognizes the contribution of teachers, students, emerging and established scholars to the development of international social studies and encourages new research in all areas of social studies education.

    The winner of the award is announced at the NCSS IA business meeting at the annual NCSS IA conference.

    Eligible contestants are school practitioners, undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and scholars who are members of NCSS IA. Contestants may apply for the award or they can be nominated by NCSS members. The Award Committee reserves the right to award papers in 2 categories: a) best research paper and b) best paper about educational practice. Only papers accepted for the IA conference can be considered for the award. Accepted manuscripts and published papers are eligible. The deadline for submission of the paper itself or for a reference to a published paper is 3 weeks before the NCSS IA conference. Manuscripts are submitted to the Editor of the Journal of International Social Studies Anatoli Rapoport ( or IA Chair Jing Williams ( by email attachment.

    The Award Committee consists of the Editor of Journal of International Social Studies and at least 2 past Presidents of NCSS IA. In some cases, Award Committee members can be appointed by JISS Editor. Committee members advising students who submit papers will recuse themselves from the review process for that student.

    To be considered for the Award the paper or the article should meet the following criteria:

    1. It is an original work.
    2. It is accepted for the 2019 IA conference.
    3. It addresses the problems of social studies education from an international perspective.
    4. It is written in English.
