Dear Friends of Human Rights in the Many NCSS Associated Groups and Communities of Interest,

Greetings from the Executive Committee of the NCSS Human Rights Education Community – Rosemary Blanchard, Gail Barker, Mariel Waters.

In a little more than two weeks, the Human Rights Education Community will participate in the 96th Annual Conference of the National Council for the Social Studies in Washington, DC and the Walter Washington Conference Center (801 Mt Vernon Pl NW, Washington, DC 20001) and nearby conference hotels, primarily the Marriott Marquis (901 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001). We hope that many of you will be able to attend and participate in the NCSS Conference and join us for the special programs being hosted by the Human Rights Education (HRE) Community.  I am attaching a flyer with the HRE Community sponsored events. Later this week, I’ll also post a guide to the many  HRE related presentations that are included throughout the entire NCSS program.  These are not, in most cases HRE Community sponsored, but we have noted them as relevant to the concerns of human rights educators.

We have been through an extremely contentious and angry election. The outcome of that election has raised many troubling questions about the respect with which we and our neighbors treat each other and treat those among us who are “different,” in ethnicity, immigration status, gender identity, beliefs, race, socioeconomic status, and more. What are social studies educators in general and human rights oriented educators in particular called upon to bring to their classroom, their students? How can we help each other meet the challenge of being faithful to our professional values and standards?

We hope many of you will be joining us at the NCSS 96th Annual Conference in Washington DC, December 2-4 (with pre-conference events and post-conference opportunities to go make political rounds, if you can.  If you won’t be there, please keep in touch and let us know how the post-election school year is shaping up where you live.   In subsequent postings,  we’ll share the full guide to HRE-related presentations at NCSS 2016 and individual invitations to special events. We hope to see many of you at
