Re: Exploring the Rationales and Purposes of Social Studies Teacher Educators

    Dear Social Studies Teacher Educator:

You are being invited to participate in a research study called “Engaging the Rationales and Purposes of Social Studies Teacher Educators.” This study is being conducted by Todd S. Hawley and Michael Levicky of Kent State University and Evan Mooney of Montclair State University. Approximately, 75 to 100 people will participate in this study. You may qualify to take part in this research study because you are currently working as a social studies teacher educator. This study will take roughly 1 to 2 hours of your time.

If you decide to participate in the study, you will be asked to participate in 1 individual interview. You may also be asked to provide examples of your work as a teacher educator, but this is not intended to take up a great deal of your time.

Data collection for the study will be over by May 2018 after all of the individual interviews have been completed. As the data is being analyzed, you may, from time to time, be asked a few follow up questions. However, you can leave the study at any time and any data associated with your participation can be expunged from the data set.

The investigators will keep all written materials locked in a desk drawer or a locked filing cabinet in a locked office. Any electronic or digital information will be stored on a computer that is password protected. Regulations require that research data be kept for at least three years.

The results of this study will be published (e.g., academic journal articles and books) and presented at academic conferences. Any information, such as your name or other identifying information, will not be published without your consent. This study is being conducted to enrich the understanding of the range of purposes that guide the practices of social studies teacher educators.

If you would like to volunteer to participate, or to request additional information about this study, please contact Todd S. Hawley at or 330.672.0670.

Thank you for your consideration, and once again, please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in learning more about our project.
