  • 1.  White Euro-American Educators' Race-Consciousness Research Study

    Posted 11-13-2020 12:08:00 PM
I am interested in hearing stories from active or retired social studies educators who self-identify as white or Euro-American social justice educators.

Hello, my name is Patricia McClure (NCSS & CUFA student member), and I am a Ph.D. candidate at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I am currently conducting research for my dissertation to understand the experiences of white Euro-American social studies educators as they move from non-racism to anti-racism. The purpose of the study is to identify mechanisms that move white Euro-American educators from race-blindness to anti-racism.

If you are willing to participate in this study, I will conduct one (1) Zoom audio-recorded interview that will last no more than 90 minutes in length. This interview will happen at a convenient time for you, and I will contact you by phone to make arrangements. There will also be one (1) Zoom audio-recorded focus group talking circle of approximately 8-10 participants and will last no more than 2 hours. The focus group talking circle's date and time will be established through Doodle polling, an online appointment scheduler.  Lastly, participants may participate in the Zoom interview and focus group talking circle without having their video on or revealing their real names.

Once the interviews are complete, the recording will be transcribed, and the recording will be destroyed. I will provide a copy of the transcript once it is available, and I am willing to share the results of my research with you once it is completed if you like. Your participation in this study is voluntary, and your identity will be held confidential. I will use a pseudonym for you, and no identifiable information about your institution will be used.

Participants are not required to provide any documentation supporting oral information. However, you may voluntarily share any document(s) such as course syllabi, curriculum and instruction resources, assignments, photos, journal entries, notes, and letters to support your stories. All volunteered documents will undergo document analysis; therefore, all personal and institutional information must be deleted before given to the researcher.

There are no known risks for participation in this study. However, if you feel you need to withdraw from the study, you can do so at any time without risk to you. If you think you may consider participating in this study, please go to this Redcap Survey page to take a short survey and review the consent form. If you have additional questions about this study or your participation in this study, please contact me at or call me at 505-596-0259 (Google Voice).

Thank you in advance for your consideration. I know your time is valuable, and I thank you for reading this post and consider participating. As a white Euro-American woman social studies educator, I value your input, and I hope you will choose or recommend someone to participate in this study with me.
