    A Call for Manuscripts: Women's Studies for Young Learners

    As we near the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920, it is a fitting time for elementary educators to reconsider ways of addressing women's studies in the K-6 social studies curriculum.  How are elementary teachers addressing the rich and diverse history of women in their teaching?  What resources are effective for teaching and learning about women's contributions to our history and society?  What challenges do teachers face as they strive to infuse women's issues into the existing curriculum?  Educators are invited to share their ideas for, and experiences with, teaching women's studies in K-6 settings.

    Please prepare your submission for the next (January/February 2019) themed issue of Social Studies and the Young Learner by:

    • Reviewing the guidelines and tips for SSYL authors at
    • Considering important content related to women's studies that should be included in the K-6 social studies curriculum
    • Reviewing examples from the January/February 2014 issue of SSYL with the theme "Remember the Ladies" while choosing new lesson topics or building upon those lessons in new ways
    • Sharing innovative instructional approaches for teaching women's studies at the elementary school level
    • If possible, teaching a K-6 lesson, describing it for other teachers, and gathering evidence (drawings, writing, and dialogue) of students' learning.

    Then, submit your work for peer review by the due date of Friday, June 1, 2018, to Guest Editor Dr. Bárbara Cruz, University of South Florida, at Prior to the due date, you may also send an outline of your idea for an article for initial, informal feedback. We look forward to hearing from you!
