    Hello everyone!
    My name is Kelsey and I am currently a senior in the Social Studies Education program. I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on how to use writing in the Social Studies classroom.
    I really appreciate any comments or suggestions that you may have tried.

    Hi Kelsey,

         There are several ideas to consider when using writing in the Social Studies. I believe the more the students write, the better it is for them. I would have students write position paragraphs/papers on various topics, including current issues if they fit into the curriculum. I always had an essay question on every test, and for some advanced students, I only gave essay tests that required them to apply their learning. You can always have students write a brief paragraph or summary of the main ideas in a given lesson. It is a good way to assess, formally or informally, if the students understand the main ideas of your lessons.

    Have you tried entering search terms like "write," "writing," and "reporting" in the search box at 
                               www.socialstudies.org                  ?
    Doing that might result in a list of articles in NCSS journals over the years that discuss writing and social studies.
