There are several ideas to consider when using writing in the Social Studies. I believe the more the students write, the better it is for them. I would have students write position paragraphs/papers on various topics, including current issues if they fit into the curriculum. I always had an essay question on every test, and for some advanced students, I only gave essay tests that required them to apply their learning. You can always have students write a brief paragraph or summary of the main ideas in a given lesson. It is a good way to assess, formally or informally, if the students understand the main ideas of your lessons.
