    K-12 Educator professional development program
    Walking the Tokaido: Self-Guided Multi-Disciplinary Experience, June-August, 2021
    With support from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership

    Learn about the history and culture of Japan, both past and present, as you virtually walk the Tokaido from Tokyo to Kyoto (approx 320 miles)

    Using the MyVirtualMission ( platform, participants will exercise (walk, run, swim, cycle, etc.) and log their distances into the dedicated mission page. Progress along the Tōkaidō will be updated as miles are posted, and users will be able view their location on Google Maps as well as Google Street View. At each of 10 stations, participants will complete readings, view recorded videos, and respond to forum prompts on the FCCEAS Moodle ( Optional materials for seven additional stations will be available for further exploration.

     Participants will receive all required seminar materials, including the following books, to be shipped to the participants in advance of the seminar: You Gotta Have Wa, Robert Whiting; Japan Journeys, Andreas Marks; Japanese Inn, Oliver Statler, and a map of Japan. Additional required and optional materials will be posted on the seminar Moodle.

    Seminar completion requirements include: complete assigned books, articles and short videos, respond to 2 Moodle discussion forum prompts at each of 10 stations, and view 4 recorded webinars. This program is asynchronous; there are no required meetings. Participants may complete the program at any time from June through August.

    Participants who successfully complete the seminar requirements will receive a certificate of completion for 30 contact hours and a one-year subscription to Education about Asia (beginning fall 2021).

    Accommodations are available for those who are not able to or choose not to walk.
