Journalism 101: Newspapers, the Common Core and the Social Studies Classroom (NSSSA session)

How can you use current events to support literacy standards? This workshop gives educators an introduction to strategies and tools for bringing the news into the social studies classroom, using topics from the layout of a front page to the criteria journalists use to decide which stories make the cut. Participants model a hands-on front page activity and learn about Common Core aligned lesson plans and free online resources from the Newseum, including the “Today’s Front Pages” exhibit.
